Postage Stamps on Aitchison College, Lahore

While driving on the main Mall Road, Lahore from the city centre to the cantonment, one can see a majestic Victorian style building to one's left near the Lahore Canal. This is the Aitchison College or the Chiefs' College which it is informally known.

Established in 1886 mainly for the wards of the British officers and some loyal landlords of the area, this education institution soon became a premiere institution in the South Asia of its time. The institution was named after the then Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Sir Charles Umpherston Aitchison, whose vision for the institution was to produce educated individuals with a refined personality.

The college has retained its traditions and style of education since its inception and continues to educate the wards of the elite of Lahore and surrounding areas. The college is the second only school in Pakistan that is a part of the Headmasters' Conference.

Pakistan Post issued two stamps on Aitchison College: one on the centenary celebrations of the college in 1986 and the other on the 125th anniversary of the college.

Some of the notable personalities of Pakistan who have attended the Aitchison include: former Prime Minister of Pakistan Malik Feroz Khan Noon, former Governor West Pakistan Nawab Amir Mohammad Khan of Kalabagh, former Governor Balochistan province of Pakistan Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, former foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and famous cricketer turned politician Imran Khan.

Year of Dragon: Chinese Dragon Stamp Creates Controversy

A set of stamps depicting China's ancient national symbol Dragon has created a controversy and furore in China. Chinese have reacted angrily to a special edition stamp to celebrate the Year of the Dragon to be celebrated later this month.

The controversial dragon stamp issued to commemorate the current Year of Dragon

Scores of collectors and social commentators have complained about the ferocious-looking 2012 dragon. 

"The dragon on the stamp looks too ferocious," says one blogger, while some foreign observers say that it is perhaps officially backed to covey a strong message about China's rise.

However, Cchen Shaohua, the designer of the new stamp, defended it saying the image of the dragon should not be too gentle because it would clash with the mental image most Chinese have of the creature.

"The dragon is the deity of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and you can't modernise the creature like a cartoon," official Xinhua news agency quoted Chen, who designed the emblem for 2008 Olympic Games, as saying.

The first set of dragon stamps, issued in 1988, abandoned the awe-inspiring look of the legendary creature and used the style of Chinese traditional paper-cutting art to tone down its appearance.

Despite the furore, the sellers at a philatelic market in Beijing were reporting bumper pre-sale orders, with eager collectors paying up to £18 for a commemorative pack of the 12 penny stamps which went on sale on Thursday, 5 Jan 2012, reports The Telegraph.

Postage stamps commemorating Iqbal: National Poet of Pakistan

Dr Sir Muhammad Allama Iqbal is the national poet of Pakistan. Born on 9 November 1877, this great philosopher turned poet and politician had the vision to dream of a separate homeland for the Muslims of the British India, It was he who requested Muhammad Ali Jinnah to lead the Muslims of the British India in their quest for a separate homeland, where Muslims could lead their life as per their aspirations and distinct social cutlture and heritage.

All long his life, he wrote motivational poetry to motivate the Muslims of the British India in particular and that f the world in general to stand on their own, away from the yoke of slavery and work hard to compete the West by their intellect and art.

He supported the Muslim cause, but could not live long enough to see his dream materialize as he left for his heavenly abode on 21 April 1938, just nine years before the creation of Pakistan.

Towers of Friendship: Joint Commemorative Pakistan-Iran Stamps

Pakistan and Iran issued a set of three commemorative stamps jointly on 29 August bearing the two towers: The Minar-e-Pakistan, Lahore Pakistan and the Milad Tower, Tehran Iran, as shown above. All three stamps have a face value of Rs. 8. The first stamp (above left) shows both the towers and the flags of Pakistan and Iran. The stamp in the centre above shows the Milad Tower, while the stamp on the right above shows the Minar-e-Pakistan.

Milad Tower, or the Burj-e-Milad, is the tallest tower in Iran, which stands 435 m (1,427 ft) high from base to tip of the antenna. Minar-e-Pakistan, or the Pakistan Tower, has a height of 60 m (181 feet from its base). The two towers symbolize the immense friendly relations between the two countries.

Stamps of Ottoman Empire (Turkey)

The postal history of Turkey can be divided into two part.  Turkey before  and after 1923. Before 1923, the modern day Turkey  was part of the greater Ottoman Empire, which was tspread from Yugoslavia, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania in the west, to Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the borders of Persia in the east. 

The Ottoman Empire installed its postal organization in 1840 and issued its first adhesive on 1^st January 1863.  The horizontal pair of two stamps shown is one of two recorded unused items.

Pakistan issued a postage stamps on 11 different occasions during 1972. I may be noted that despite creation of Bangla Desh, the erstwhile East Pakistan in December 1971, the stamps issued by Pakistan during the whole of 1972 continued to bear word Pakistan in the Bengali text.

On the eve of 25th Anniversary of the Independence, two sets of stamps were issued on 14 August 1972. The first set consisted of 2 stamps as shown above. The stamps of Paisa 10 and 60 denominations displayed portrait of Jinnah and Minare-e-Pakistan (Paisa 10 stamp), Building State Bank of Pakistan, Islamabad (Paisa 60 stamp) 

The second set of four stamps issued on the 25th Anniversary of the Independence depicted display of various field in which Pakistan had progressed and made significant development. All stamps had a face value of Paisa 20. The stamps displayed (from top to bottom): Land Reforms, Labour Reforms, Education Policy and Health Policy by the newly formed government of Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto.

The last stamp of the year was issued on the eve of Inauguration of Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) - the first of its kind in Pakistan. The stamp was issued on 28th November 1972 and the face value of Paisa 20. The stamp displayed the drawing of the Power Plant's elevation on a multicoloured background.

Pakistan Stamps with Bangladesh Overprint:

Meanwhile, the newly created Bangladesh, the erstwhile East Pakistan, continued to use Pakistani stamps with Bangladesh overprint till they issued their own first indigenous stamps.
